Something that will go a long way in fostering understanding, restoration and harmony in our country is the mutual learning of languages. Mandela said that if you speak in a language that someone understands it goes to his head but if you speak in their language it goes to their heart. Living here with a few American’s it feel really good when they pick up South African slang and use it in conversation. Somehow you feel affirmed and valued that someone would take the time to learn your language.
Perhaps you have been wanting to learn a new language for a while but found it too daunting. I have some good news. There is a easy, free way to get the ball moving. Unisa university is offering free beginner online courses in 5 SA languages. There is enough information to help you hold a basic conversation with someone of a different langauge. It also has voice recordings of the correct pronounciation of the words which is a nice feature. I commend Unisa on taking the initiative and hope that those who have wanted to dabble in learning a new language would begin to do so.
